GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDING MASS

Please watch our video: Guidelines for Returning to Mass

video

The safety of our parishioners, staff, and celebrants is critically important as we come together. Per Diocesan guidelines Parishioners who are medically vulnerable or over the age of 65 should remain at home for now.

Based on input from health, logistics, and canonical experts, we have devised procedures to allow for a safe and joyful liturgy. Parishioners must follow these procedures if they wish to attend Mass. We thank you for your patience and your cooperation.

Carmel Mission Guidelines for Attending Mass in the Time of COVID-19.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST WEAR A MASK AND PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING AT ALL TIMES ON MISSION PROPERTY.

Parking: Parking will be available in the school lot. Access to the Mission will only be available through the JSS lot gate.

Entrance: There will be a check in before entering the Mission grounds. Here all attendees will have their temperature taken and will be provided with hand sanitizer.

Seating: In the Basilica we will seating in every other pew, with a maximum of 3 non family members per pew. Kindly follow the ushers instructions and practice physical distancing at all times when in the Basilica. We will have seating available as well in the front courtyard. If you prefer to remain in the courtyard and be seated there, please let the ushers know. Communion will be distributed in the courtyard for those who wish to receive.

Singing: Singing by the community is discouraged at this time. Per Diocesan guidelines only the cantor will sing during the Mass.

Physical contact during Mass: Please do not hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer or offer a sign of peace. We will take time in prayer for peace at that moment.

Communion: Please remain standing and in your pews during communion. The minister of communion will come to you. If you wish to receive communion please extend your hands, creating a throne for the Lord, with your dominant hand on top with your other hand supporting underneath. When the minister says, “The Body of Christ” the response is “Amen.” Please leave your mask on until the minister has moved away from you, then you may remove your mask and consume the Body of Christ. Please immediately put your mask back on after receiving communion. The procedure is the same for those in the courtyard, please remain standing in front of your chair and the minister will come to you.

Dismissal: We will be leaving the Basilica beginning with those in the back of the church. Please remain in your pews until an usher indicates that you may exit through the main Basilica doors.. Please practice social distancing and keep your mask in place until you have returned to your car. Due to the need to deep clean the Basilica, no one may remain in the church for any reason after the Mass has concluded, please exit when indicated by the usher.

Please note:

Financial stewardship: There will be no basket passed at the time of the Preparation of the Gifts. If at all possible, please continue to give electronically through carmelmission.org. If you need to bring your offering to the Mission, please place in in the box designated for that purpose at the main door upon entry or exit.

Volunteers: Out of a desire to safeguard the health of all our volunteers and our staff, volunteers will not be serving at Mass at this time. Access to the Sanctuary and Sacristy is restricted to Staff only.

Bulletins: Paper bulletins will not be available. The Bulletin will continue to be available online at carmelmission.org.

Restrooms: The Downie restrooms will be available for emergency use only. Please restrict the use of the restrooms as much as possible.

Cleaning: The Church and Courtyards will be completely cleaned and disinfected after each Mass. Thank you for your cooperation in leaving the grounds immediately after being dismissed from Mass so this work can be accomplished.
