The longest, continuous ministry at Carmel Mission Basilica is the Altar Society, celebrating their 85th year! Established in 1934, under the direction of Father O’Connell, the organization grew in membership and held their functions in Crespi Hall. This location continues today.

The purpose of this Society has always been to provide care and upkeep for the altar linens and to give financial assistance for additional needs of the altar. A volunteer committee of Linen Care Helpers who collect, wash, and iron the purificators and corporals used at the Mass are assigned, each helping for a minimum of one month. We are always in need of more volunteers to help with this precious service.

As part of community outreach and hospitality, the society meets for a luncheon or tea and a brief meeting four times a year, and these events are open to all. Our events are usually on the second Thursday of the month that they occur, which is September, December, March, and May. A Day of Recollection or retreat day is our March event.

Come and be a part of this historic and vital ministry and meet wonderful members of our parish community.
