Pastor’s Weekly Message 9-1-19

Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,

Our Bulletin cover this weekend features a photograph of some local farm workers.

We are blessed to live in an area that produces so much food, not only for local consumption, but much of is exported around the world.

I remember how that realization was brought home to me.

Some sixteen years ago, my family hosted a party to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday. We gathered at a hotel in County Clare, on the west coast of Ireland. Before dessert was served, one of my brothers asked me to come with him to the hotel kitchen.

My mom’s favorite dessert, fresh strawberries and cream, was prepared for serving. My brother handed me a shell case of strawberries, and asked me to look at the label. “Produced by Driscoll Farms, Watsonville, California” was what I read. By the way, they were delicious!

At our masses this weekend, we will hear about how our parishioners reach out to some of the families of the farm workers who pick those delicious strawberries, and so many other crops of fruit and vegetables.

Through our Falge Farmworker Program, many of our parishioners endeavor to make life a little more comfortable for those whose daily toil in the fields produces such a rich harvest.

Blessings,

Fr. Paul
