Overview

We welcome you and your child to a blessed year of preparation for First Communion and First Reconciliation.

The First Communion preparation program at Carmel Mission guides children toward an initial understanding of the mystery of Christ and Eucharist as they prepare to come to the Lord’s Table for the first time.

The Diocese of Monterey’s guidelines for First Communion require a two year preparation period. Six year olds or first graders participate in Pre-Sacrament Faith Formation programs. Seven year olds or second graders participate in Faith Formation programs, plus intensive programs specific to First Communion and First Reconciliation.

This initial requirement can be met by public school and home school children by attending Faith Formation Classes on Sunday morning, from 10:30-11:30, during the child’s first and second grade year.

This requirement can also be met by Junipero Serra School (JSS) students in their religion classes.

Both sets of children—children participating in the parish Faith Formation program, and children attending JSS—will attend retreats together in their second year of preparation, and will receive the sacraments together within the Carmel Mission Community.

Parish Faith Formation: First Communion and First Reconciliation Program

On this site you will find the requirements for children and parents that are a part of the Parish Faith Formation Program. The core preparation for the sacraments takes place within the Sunday morning Faith Formation classes, and are supplemented with intensive preparation for each sacrament in the form of parent/child retreats.

Celebrating Mass is an integral part of your child’s preparation. We highly recommend that your child participate in Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:15 Mass.
